Fed: No extra risks under new air safety system, says ATSB

Australia's transport watchdog says flying is just as safe under the nation's new air
safety rules as the system it replaced.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau says there have been no adverse safety trends
since the introduction of the New Airspace System in November.

But the bureau, which issued a discussion paper yesterday, says there is a need to
review the system.

An ATSB spokesman says a review of the NAS has found there were 37 alerts, or safety
situations, after the system was introduced, and 38 in the same period a year earlier.

The comment comes after the new system came under fire from air traffic controllers'
and pilots' associations.
