Vic;Penguin behind bars in suburban Melbourne.

A baby penguin is behind bars today after being found in the back yard of a north suburban
Melbourne home overnight.

The penguin was found by a Preston resident who flagged down a police car about 2.30am.

The bird was taken back to Preston police station where it was given a bowl of water
and a box for shelter.

Constable KELVIN BROWN says the penguin appears quite calm despite its adventures.

It's not known why the protected bird is so far from its natural habitat.

Constable BROWN says the 30cm penguin is described as fluffy and appears to be quite young.

It will remain behind bars in the cell until the appropriate authorities are able to
collect it later today.
